A new international terminal at Yangon airport is scheduled to open next week, with some flights to be moved to the new facilities, relieving strained capacity at the country’s main international gateway.

Once complete, the new building will be able to handle 6 million passengers a year, more than double the airport’s current capacity of 2.7 million.

A spokesperson for Asia World Group, whose subsidiary Pioneer Aero-drome Services is building the new terminal, said the opening date is set for March 12, the Myanmar Times reported on Friday.

Following a controversial tender, Pioneer Aerodrome signed a contract with the Department of Civil Aviation in 2013 to build and operate the new terminal, beating several international firms.

The company also manages the existing airport in Yangon, as well as Nay Pyi Taw international airport, which opened in 2011. As part of the renovation, local flights will be moved to the old international terminal and the domestic terminal will be demolished.

With Myanmar’s tourism master plan targeting 7.5 million arrivals by 2020, the airport’s upgrade comes not a moment too soon.

Meanwhile, work is due to start on a giant new airport in Bago Region, which was first imagined in the early 1990s. The US$1ǐ billion project is slated for completion in 2022 and will be built by Singapore’s Yongham Holdings, Changi Airport Planners and Engineers, and Japan’s JGC Corporation.

The airport will become Myanmar’s largest, with the capacity to handle up to 12 million passengers a year.
