CHIBA — Japan’s first fast lane immigration service will start on Wednesday at key international airports near Tokyo and Osaka in a bid to speed up procedures for certain foreign visitors, airport operators said.

Narita airport and Kansai International Airport will start the service on Wednesday targeting such people as conference attendees and VIPs. They will be allowed to enter the fast lanes upon showing a coupon provided in advance by their airlines at the entrance to immigration.

Narita airport showed the facility to reporters in a demonstration Monday ahead of its opening.

“We want to enhance the value of Narita airport by reducing the waiting time,” said an official of Narita International Airport Corp, the operator of the airport.

Fast lanes will be set up at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Narita, with each flight bringing in about five such users.

The government approved the new service, initiated by government agencies including the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, in a bid to make Japan a tourism-oriented country, the company said.

Japan has seen a rise in foreign visitors ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, according to the operator of Narita airport.

London’s Heathrow airport and Singapore’s Changi airport already have such a service, it said.
